Chapter 9

Lauren gripped the steering wheel, racing toward the outskirts of town. The streets were deserted, probably due to the wailing tornado sirens which were almost drowned out by the torrential rain. Tanner must have alerted the fire department to the impending twister.

What had he been thinking, asking her to stay? He had no right to question her career choices. She hadn’t told him how to do his job, so why did he get to tell her why she shouldn’t do hers?

Dark cumulonimbus clouds billowed overhead, blocking out any traces of sun. Lightning flashed against the sky, followed almost immediately by a crack of thunder that vibrated through the car’s floorboard. Lauren swallowed back her fear and blinked away the tears clouding her vision.

She squinted, struggling to make out the road through the sheets of falling rain. Her wiper blades swished back and forth furiously as they attempted to keep up.

Four years, and you still feel it too. Don’t you? Tanner’s words echoed in her head like the beat of a drum.

Of course she still felt it. The pull between them had always been undeniable, like a cyclone sucking them in. But that didn’t mean they could just pick back up where they’d left off.

She’d thought things were different this time. They’d definitely had a moment in the weather center where the conversation had been easy and the chemistry just right. Then he’d asked her about her plans, and it was like she’d gone through a time portal.

Chasing storms helped her feel close to her parents, yes. But this was so much more than a coping mechanism now—it was a career choice. Her reports helped warn viewers of potential dangers. She found the tornadoes so others could stay away from them.

She let out a yelp as her car hydroplaned. Her knuckles turned white as she fought the urge to slam on the brakes. The instructions of her mentors reminded her to stay calm and maintain control. She kept a firm hold of the steering wheel, and soon her tires made contact again with the pavement.

She’d chased some scary storms before, but never something this strong—and this close—on her own. Everything in her screamed to turn back, but she forced herself to push on.

Doyle would be ecstatic if she got him pictures for tonight’s newscast. It would be one step closer to securing the roving reporter position.

There! In the distance, wind swirled the clouds together in the beginning stages of a funnel. She’d found the mesocyclone.

“Come on,” she muttered, pressing the gas a bit harder. “Form a tornado.”

She glanced at the phone in her lap, not bothering to pull to the side of the road. The screen glowed, showing the barometric readings. It was an app for hobbyists—nowhere near as sophisticated as the station’s top-of-the-line equipment—but that, combined with a visual of the skies and a desperate need to get away from Tanner, was all she had right now.

Memories assaulted her as she sped toward the mesocyclone, accompanied by emotions that made her breathless.
